Have you been finding it hard to get a good night’s sleep lately? Do you know someone who is struggling to get the proper rest they need each night? If so, insomnia may be to blame. What exactly is insomni and what are some of the most common insomnia causes?

Insomnia is a term used to describe a situation which makes you unable to sleep properly at night. We all need a certain number of hours sleep each night in order to function properly during the day. This sleep must consist of periods of deep sleep in which the body is able to repair and renew cells. This restorative sleep is essential for good health and mental well being.

Nothing can be more frustrating than to have to essentially sleep-walk your way through life because you were unable to get the rest and sleep you needed the night before. Let’s look at two of the more common insomnia causes.

1.) Stress and Anxiety

It’s very common in today’s world to be stressed out about so many things. Money worries, relationships, work, children, can all give us sleepless nights. Night time is often when any anxieties play on our minds as we lay in bed trying to sleep. You lay there tossing and turning but unable to get any of the rest you so badly need.

The best treatment for any anxiety is to determine the main insomnia causes, and then find a solution. Taking sleeping pills isn’t the answer. Write down your worries as this helps.

2.) Too much sugar before bedtime

blood sugar inbalances, you must stabilise your blood sugar levels as during sleep the body is fasting for a long period of time. If your body experiences low blood sugar levels during the night, you will probably find yourself waking up since your body requires sustenance to keep it working properly.

Ideally you should eat complex carbohydrates a few hours before you go to bed, and not try to sleep on an empty stomach. A banana sandwhich using wholemeal bread is a good example. Complex carbs contain seratonin which helps you relax and this can be found in wholemeal bread. Bananas contain potassium which many insomniacs are lacking in.Potassium can help ease anxiety and depression.

3.) If you enjoy a cup of coffee in the evening, try decaffeinated instead of regular. Some people are very sensitive to caffeine and a cup of strong coffee could keep you awake most of the night if you are sensitive to it. The same rule applies to alcohol.
